Barnes & Noble BNTV250 Reviews

Barnes & Noble BNTV250 Review by k.w.

First, I like it, It's my new favorite toy. I've had it 3 days.

This thing gets 4 stars as an E Reader (-1 star for being in BN lockdown mode), 3 stars as a TABLET (limited app availability) and 5 stars for being the perfect pre-bedtime Entertainment TV/Reader.

My background as a reviewer is I have an android smartphone, a 2010 Compaq laptop with Windows 7 and I'm a lifer as a PC (non-mac) user. Never owned a tablet nor an EReader but I've used the NOOK app on my smartphone (which is amazing BTW). I've perused the previous NOOKS and was very disappointed at the buttons and user interface. This is a SIGNIFICANT improvement over the previous, with a fast duo-core processor, micro SD expandable, and it claims to have 16 GB on board memory (ONLY 1 GB IS FOR YOUR PC-TRANSFERRED MEDIA: CAUTION!). I don't know yet if the expandable micro SD will give you more space for NON-BARNES AND NOBLE content. I see this is a major, major, major star deduction in the Quote Unquote....."Tablet" category. It takes this little gizmo from HERO to almost ZERO for this user. :( I'll have to get a separate tablet OR return this one.

That said, I see advantages to being the "best" at only a few things.

It's primarily an E reader and Netflix and HULU viewer with Web surfing capability. As someone who was not doing much e-reading on my smartphone or laptop (occasional textbook or a Nook book loaned to me), I am sooo loving that the NOOK Tablet introduced me to the new way convenient way (inexpensively) to save paper, read books, magazines, and newspaper WITHOUT extra clutter. I am a chronic book purchaser, so having my first E READER may take care of my "where the heck do I put these books?" -- problem. BTW, I am loving having my smartphone (Sony X10)sharing of nook books and mags on the go, and my NOOK articles for bedtime reading. Textbooks: lady in the store said textbooks, if they are PDF or PUB files, can be viewed on this here thingy. BUT and this is a big BUT... Mind the ONLY 1 GB OF YOUR OWN MEDIA THING.

Ok, this 1GB of memory thing may cause the review to have 1 more star taken off for the dishonesty of the "16 GB" claim, and the non-open-source nature of their BNAndroid OS, and 1 star added back -ok, ok- for the really super low price. That keeps the review at 4. :( Hmmph.

Netflix + E Reading beautifully + Web + flash playing video + dedicated volume on side + cute little keychain loop (design) = $249.00 (that's not bad!)

Having a dedicated E-reader "plus more" might just be what I've been looking for. A laptop is too clunky sometimes. Inconvenient for pre-bedtime movie streaming. The limitless book seleciton capabilities (I can change selections if I'm bored) is such a nice benefit to having a NOOK.

ANDROID: This seems to be B and N hybrid version of Android OS.

This little tablet reader is great because then--it limits how media explosive you're allowed to be. Sometimes I think that we are "overwhelmed" by too many options. This device is great for bedtime ET. don't get a bedroom TV get a nook. But then buy a tablet PC also, for virtual online school and/or work for your MS OFFICE and all that stuff. Very limited app avaiilabilitiy. But for like $4 bucks there is a NOOK office app that, I 've heard, lets you do Office things. (you can read them for free, but to edit: buy the app).

So.. If you speak android phone already, you will feel frustrated a bit with limited app avail. (No Google MAPS app, for example). However, you quickly realize that ah ha! It's different from your smart phone, and that's something to love. The netflix app dissipates any bad feelings, alone. Then, the "flash" player ability (type in you tube and you stream videos on web, directly - try that on your previous android OS).

Even though you can't have amazon, best buy, google reader apps- which I find essential, you can WEB browse these sites. I don't know how to PODCAST upload This american life yet and that's a bummer, but I can just do that on my smart phone.

Pros: netflix app, web browsing, great color resolution, access to B and N is convenient. Dedicated volume rocker control, "expandable" micro SD "claims " to go up to 32 or additional 32 GB but other users have found this to be untenable.

Cons: You can forget about 90 percent of the apps you know and love. Only have few nook apps (probably because of this being a B and N android applied OS).

CAUTION as ANOTHER reviewer pointed out ONLY 1 GB OF THE ON BOARD MEMORY BELONGS TO YOUR CONTENT: MUSIC, VIDEO, DOCS, WHATEVER. The rest is B and N reserved territory.

Music: Does not play WMV files so you'll have to convert them to MP3 before uploading to the NOOK.

Sound: onboard speaker is ok. I really enjoyed the listening experience with headphones, watching favorite TV shows streaming. The TV / netflix HULU streaming are thus far my favorite features.

Plus, and this is a big plus-- I love the reader. Click* and the page turns. Mmmm. I know E readers aren't new. But the set up was SO EASY. I don't mind that these are not "E-ink" pages because I read sort of slow and - well,- honestly, I guess I'm staring at a laptop in full-color all day anyways. So the Reader is not a problem, to me. I've heard some say if you've an avid page turner, you need to go with the monochrome Nook in B and W. BUY YOUR SCREEN PROTECTOR, HOLDER, AND ACCESSORIES AT AMAZON THEY ARE WAY CHEAPER HERE.

I might have to buy a separate Tablet, or, a PC Tablet. For $249 (at B and N stores or online), this thing is a fantastic addition to my home entertainment set-up, organization of books (saves paper and space), and a lightweight little buddy for web surfing on an ample screen.

For tablet, I'm thinking of the Samsung Galaxy 10.1, Motorola Xoom, HP TouchPad, Sony S, or even perhaps HP Slate. It might be nice to have the (Tablet) productivity machine in your life be "separate" from your home leisure entertainment device. The NOOK is that home leisure entertainment compain. All the while, it is still light enough to sneak around with you. You may love it so much you'll jealously guard it from the public, and keep it at home for safekeeping, lest you drop it, scratch it, or someone hijacks it from you. And if it does get hi-jacked you can set a password for acessing the NOOK , just like cell phones. That way, you are safeguarding your docs, photos, personal stuff from the wrong hands.

This tablet is awesome...it took me 10 minutes to root it and turn it into a complete Android tablet legally...i did this without changing anything that originally came with the tablet...so now i have the barnes & nobles tablet with full Android market...best of both worlds...simply awesome

Barnes & Noble BNTV250 Review by William Karoly "Bill Karoly" (Tulsa, OK)

It accepts up to 32gb micro sd cards but does not work properly with a 32gb card. Mine would not boot because the card used too much energy. That was the only issue I had. Customer service told me to unplug the card before booting up and then insert the card. I returned it and purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus.

Funny thing is Barnes and Noble rrjected my review.
